Why isn't my business showing up in ChatGPT?

The short answer

Almost always because ChatGPT can't verify enough about your business to recommend it confidently — not because you've been penalized or excluded.

Assistants recommend businesses whose information they can cross-check: consistent listings, active reviews, and a website that answers the question asked. If those signals are thin or contradictory, the answer simply names competitors whose signals aren't.

The four most common reasons

First: unclaimed or inconsistent listings. If your Google, Yelp, and Bing profiles disagree about your name, phone number, or hours — or some don't exist — cross-checking fails and confidence drops. Second: thin or stale reviews. A handful of old reviews with no owner responses reads as inactive. Third: a website that doesn't answer. If nothing on your site says you do the thing the customer asked about, there's nothing for the assistant to cite. Fourth: simple newness — a young business with a small footprint hasn't accumulated the signals yet, which is fixable but takes deliberate work.

It's absence, not punishment

There's no blacklist to appeal and no penalty to remove. Being missing from AI answers is the default state for businesses that haven't built the signals — most haven't, because most owners have never once checked what AI says about them. The businesses that do show up are usually there because their fundamentals happen to be strong, not because they did anything exotic.

How to check what AI says about you

Ask the way a customer would — “best [what you do] in [your city]” — in ChatGPT, and do the same in Perplexity and Gemini, because each assistant reads sources differently and it's common to appear in one but not another. Note which searches name you, which don't, and who gets named instead. Or run a structured check: our free AI Visibility Score does exactly this across all three assistants and shows the per-search results.

How to fix it

Work the signals in order of leverage: claim and reconcile every listing so the details match exactly; restart review flow with requests at the right moment and respond to what arrives; then publish pages that answer the specific searches you're missing. Re-check monthly — assistants pick up changes within weeks, and the before-and-after is how you'll know it's working. This audit-fix-prove loop is the entire shape of our service, and the audit half is free.

Common questions

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT directly?

No — there's no submission process for ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini recommendations. Assistants find businesses through the sources they read: listings, reviews, and websites. Strengthening those is the only reliable way in.

How long until changes show up in AI answers?

Assistants typically pick up changes within weeks, but each updates on its own schedule and nobody can honestly promise a date. Monthly re-checks are how you see the movement without guessing.

I show up in Gemini but not ChatGPT — why?

Each assistant weighs sources differently, so uneven visibility is normal. The fix is the same fundamentals everywhere; per-assistant tracking just tells you where the gap is biggest.
