What is an AI Visibility Score?
The short answer
An AI Visibility Score is a 0–100 measure of whether AI assistants recommend your business when customers ask.
It's calculated by running the real questions customers ask — across Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini — and scoring how often your business appears in the answers and how prominently. A top mention counts for more than a passing one; absence counts for nothing.
How the score is calculated
A visibility check runs a set of real customer questions for your industry and city — “best med spa in Scottsdale,” “top rated dentist near me” — against each AI assistant. Every question-and-assistant combination is one observation. If your business is the top recommendation, that observation scores fully; if it's mentioned but not first, it scores partially; if it's absent, it scores zero. The total, normalized to 0–100, is your score.
Because the same questions are re-run each month, the score is comparable over time. That's the point of it: not a vanity number, but a before-and-after you can hold your provider accountable with.
What the tiers mean
0–29 is Invisible: AI rarely or never names you, and customers asking AI are being sent elsewhere. 30–59 is Emerging: you appear sometimes, usually behind more established competitors. 60–79 is Competitive: you're a regular recommendation. 80–100 is Dominant: you're the answer most of the time.
Most businesses checking for the first time land low. That's not a judgment — it just reflects that they've never done the work AI rewards, because until recently nobody knew there was work to do.
Why the score moves
The score responds to the trust signals AI checks: listing consistency, review volume and recency, owner responses, and whether your website answers the questions being asked. Improve those and appearances tend to follow; neglect them and competitors who invest will displace you. Assistants also update their sources on their own schedules, which is why monthly re-checking beats one-off snapshots.

Common questions
What's a good AI Visibility Score?
Above 60 means AI recommends you regularly. But the more useful reading is direction: a 25 that becomes a 45 in two months means the inputs are working. Chasing a perfect 100 matters less than being reliably in the answer for the searches that bring you customers.
Is the score the same on every AI assistant?
Usually not — each assistant reads sources differently, so it's normal to be visible on one and absent on another. A good report shows the per-assistant breakdown so you can see exactly where the gaps are.
How often should I re-check my score?
Monthly. AI assistants pick up changes on their own schedules, so month-over-month is frequent enough to see real movement and infrequent enough that the changes are meaningful.
